Uplighting & Pinspotting - Stonebriar Country Club Myers Grand

If you’re looking for a way to make a dramatic difference for a modest price, here’s an example of uplighting and pinspotting at Stonebriar Country Club.

First, here’s a shot with uplighting only (no pinspotting):

Myers Grand - Uplighting (without pinspotting) #2

And here’s the same room with pinspots aimed at the large floral centerpieces. Notice how much the flowers stand out with the additional pin spotting:

Here’s a closer look at one of the centerpieces:

Lastly, we can also change the color of the room instantly with a lighting controller. In a spit second, the entire room has been changed to purple in these pics:

Scott & Amber - September 10, 2011

Since I just started this blog at the beginning of November, I’m still catching up on some prior weddings. Scott & Amber were married on 9/10/11, and they had a beautiful backyard wedding at the groom’s parents’ house. The weather turned out to be perfect for an outdoor reception.

To add some color to the yard, they had me shine some red uplighting in the trees and behind the bartender. If I can get my hands on some pictures, I’ll be sure to post them. It looked really great! I also included a wireless speaker on the other side of the yard, since the area was quite large, and some of the tables were a long distance from the dance floor.

Great customer service saves the day

I looked at the clock as I finished setting up the sound equipment and taping down the last cables for the lights. It was ten minutes before 6:00, so I had a little time to spare. The wedding guests would be arriving soon, but the bride and groom would still be at least another hour. It was time for me to change into my suit.

Suddenly, I realized one of my backpacks was missing. I thought to myself, “Did I leave it in my truck?”

I ran across the parking lot as the rain poured down. My tennis shoes and the bottom of my jeans sopped up the water as I splashed through puddle after puddle. After arriving at the truck, I was disappointed to find no backpack.

It finally dawned on me that I had left it, along with my dress shoes, at home in McKinney, and I was all the way in Dallas at the Filter Building on White Rock Lake. There was certainly not enough time to go home. Should I put on my suit with my soaking wet tennis shoes and cold, damp socks? Would I have time to go shoe shopping? I decided to give Google Places a try and typed a quick search for “shoes.”

First result, no answer. Probably after hours. Second result, disconnected telephone number. Third result, athletic shoes only.

Time was ticking.

I decided to try one more store, result number four: Famous Footwear. A female clerk answered the phone in a friendly tone, and I quickly told her about my shoe emergency.

“Can you please find me a pair of black dress shoes and socks? I’m at a wedding and left mine at home,” I said.

The lady said to come to the front register when I got there. It was a few minutes after 6:00 by this point, but none of the guests had arrived yet. Would I be able to make it? I thought it was worth a try.

I told the head of catering, Megan with Celebrations, that I was going to run out for some shoes and that I would be back by 6:30 if anyone asked. I made sure the dinner music playlist was loaded up and hit the “auto pilot” button. Still soaking wet from the first trip outside, I ran back through the puddles in the parking lot, hopped in my truck, and drove as quickly as I could to the store.

Fifteen minutes later, I found the store. The clock said 6:20. There was no time to shop around; I needed to get in and get out in a hurry.

The clerk knew right away from my hurried look that I was the guy who needed the dress shoes.

“I grabbed two different pair for you,” she said as she was helping another customer check out. She handed me the two boxes, and I tried on the first pair. They looked good, and they fit!

“Do you happen to have some black dress socks?” I asked.

“Yes, I have those ready for you, too,” the lady kindly said as she smiled and handed me the socks.

“Perfect! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it,” I said while another cashier was ringing up my order and charging my credit card.

She called out good luck as I ran out of the store. Obeying as many traffic laws and speed limit signs as possible, I rushed back to the Filter Building. It was 6:40, and I hurried back inside for a quick change. There was no sign of the bride and groom yet, but about half of the guests were there mingling. I had made it in time, but just barely, and only because I had found a helpful clerk who was willing to help me out in a pinch.

Don’t we wish we could always get this kind of helpful customer service? I’m sure the shoe store clerk wasn’t getting paid a huge hourly wage, and she probably wouldn’t even get a commission from the shoe sale. But she still took the time to help me out, knowing that I had little time to spare upon arriving to the store. That’s what I call a great experience!

One of the things I always strive for is to provide an exceptional customer service experience for my clients. For me, that goes way beyond playing music and setting up lights. It means being quick to respond to voicemails and emails. It means going the extra mile to make the planning process easier for the bride and groom. And in this particular case, it meant buying a new pair of shoes, so that my clients and their guests would have no idea that I had forgotten mine at home.

The Venue: Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco

Stonebriar Country Club is one of my favorite places to play in DFW. They have great food, a friendly staff, and a very nice facility. Chad & Danielle moved their reception to Stonebriar from a different venue only about month before their wedding date. The coordinators Susan & Reagan made the transition smooth and easy, and they have always been very professional and accommodating every time I’ve worked with them.

There are two main ballrooms in the clubhouse: The Claredon Room & The Myers Grand Ballroom. The Myers Grand can be seen in my 60 second commercial, and it’s large enough to hold about 250 people. Chad & Danielle’s reception was just small enough to fit in the Claredon Room. I think they had about 125 at the wedding.

The room has an antique look to it with lots of wood and earthy colors. They decided on using a reddish-gold uplighting color, which really complemented the room nicely. The awesome photographs are courtesy of Stacie Tatum Photography.

For sound, I included an extra speaker in the Formal Lounge (just outside the ballroom), so that guests could enjoy background music and cocktails in both areas.

Jason & Kim - November 11, 2011

If you’re looking for a unique idea to get your guests involved with the music selection process, here’s a tip from Jason & Kim: leave a blank on your RSVP cards for requesting a song. Quite a few of their guests took advantage of it, and I played as many of them as I could fit during the course of the evening.

The full playlist is posted below, including their “Top 11 Most Requested Songs.” (I chose to go with 11 songs because of the 11-11-11 date.) Since Jason & Kim had taken the time to tally up the requests, I decided to open the dancing with their guests’ top song choices.

The Venue: Paradise Cove in Southlake

Paradise Cove is kind of a “hidden” place on the south side of Grapevine Lake in Southlake. In fact, Google Maps didn’t quite get me all the way there. If you’re trying to find it, you need to go past the map marker at the corner of El Camino Ct. & Midway Dr. Just stay on Midway until you see it. On my first trip to visit the venue, I turned around too soon.

They have a neat spot for ceremonies that overlooks the lake, and the staff was very organized and friendly. Tina helped to make sure everything was in place and running smoothly, and Steve is one of the friendliest bartenders you’ll meet!

The Coincidental #11

When I first met with Jason & Kim about their 11-11-11 wedding, they told me about some strange coincidences with the number 11. Not only was it Kim’s favorite number, but it kept popping up throughout the wedding planning process. They booked the venue on 1/11, found “the dress” on 2/11, booked the photographers on 3/11 (the fantastic Sara & Rocky Photography), and booked the officiant and photobooth on 4/11.

As they were telling me about this, I took a quick glance at my calendar to see what the date was. May 14th. Well, even though I didn’t meet with them on the 11th, it still worked out :)

Later on, I found out that there were 11 girls that went out with Kim on her bachelorette party, which was on 9/11. The date I found this out was at our final consultation meeting on 10/11. Strange! It makes me wonder how often these things happen and perhaps we just don’t pay attention to them.

The Music

The following is a list of songs that were actually played at the wedding. I ended up playing mostly requests, as you can tell from the ** next to each song.

Cocktail Hour

You don’t need the DJ to play cocktail music when you’ve hired the incredibly talented harpist Cindy Horstman. I had the pleasure of listening to Cindy play at two different weddings in the past two weeks, and she’s one of the best harpists you’ll find anywhere.

Jason & Meredith - September 3, 2011

The Venue: Heard Craig Hall in McKinney

McKinney has some great, historical spots for weddings, and this was the first time I had played at Heard Craig Hall. One of my favorite features is the large white pillars around the room, which looked incredible with uplighting. Austin wedding photographer Geoff Duncan did an outstanding job with the photos!

mckinney-wedding-dj-uplighting dallas-wedding-dj-uplighting

Jason & Meredith had originally planned on having their reception outdoors at Chestnut Square, which is also a really neat spot; however, their guest count had gotten larger than they anticipated, and the weather was forecasted to be pretty warm. They still had the ceremony in the chapel at Chestnut Square, but then everyone headed to Heard Craig for the party!

Another unique feature of the hall is the large stage, which is what they usually use for the dance floor. In one of our early meetings, Meredith had reservations about whether people would want to walk up the steps and onto the stage for dancing, and admittedly, I did, too. Thankfully her friends and family were not shy at all, and they had no problem making their way onto the large stage, which is where I set up the speakers and dance floor lighting, as well as a few uplights along the back curtains. The rest of the DJ equipment was set up on the main floor next to the stage.

The Music

Musically, Jason & Meredith asked me to mix in some of their favorite indie pop & rock, along with some mainstream favorites and classics. Below is their wedding playlist, which includes several requests from their guests, too. Please note that this is what was actually played at their wedding.
